The University of Rijeka was founded in 1973 through the assembling of several faculties which had up to that point operated within the scope of the University of Zagreb. From its foundation, the University has undergone a series of transformations which were, for the most part, subsequent to the national higher education policy changes.

Nine faculties, an Academy of Applied Arts, four University Departments, the University Library, the Student Centre, the Foundation of the University of Rijeka and the Science and Technology Park are currently operating in the scope of the University..

The University currently numbers nearly 19.000 students.

The University constituents were founded at available city locations and are situated at some twenty locations in Rijeka. Due to that the University operates as an assembly of institutions, university policies are fragmentized and creating an institutional identity has been a source of difficulty for decades. That subsequently led to the realization of the project "Rijeka University Campus", for which the 1st faze of construction is complete and in which classes have began this winter of 2010.

The University strives to enrich and empower its neighbouring surroundings with new knowledge through participation in projects of regional development. The University in Rijeka currently actively participates in projects on topic of translational medicine, virtualized engineering, technology transfer, ecology, energy eficiency and cleaner production, to name only some, all of which through competitive european grants.
